Michelin starred chef and restaurateur Brian Turner CBE has been made an honorary doctor of Sheffield Hallam University.

The Yorkshire-born celebrity chef was presented with his certificate and medal by Vice-Chancellor Professor Philip Jones and Chancellor of the University Professor the Lord Robert Winston at Sheffield's City Hall.

Addressing the 330 graduates from the Faculty of Organisation and Management, Brian said: "Rewards for the efforts of many are often given to just one person. I'd like to thank Sheffield Hallam University on behalf of all the people I've worked with.

"Since leaving my beloved Yorkshire I've had a fantastic journey, which isn't over yet. I've had some great travels, eaten some fantastic meals and met some fantastic people. And I'm pleased that so many of you are now beginning your own journeys.

"In most cases little is given for free, or as they say here 'you don't get owt for nowt'. Your future, and the future of many of us, is in your hands. Please don't waste it. Preach the message of good, healthy food, and enjoy it. Good luck!"

Sheffield Hallam awarded the honorary doctorate for Brian's outstanding contribution to catering, broadcasting and his work for cancer and AIDS charities.

He was joined this year by Sheffield songsmith Richard Hawley; Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (and also a hugely influential broadcast journalist) Trevor Phillips OBE; esteemed journalist and Sky TV's political editor, Adam Boulton; and the Government's Chief Nursing Officer and Director General in the Department of Health for Professional Leadership, Christine Beasley.

Others who will take to the stage are successful local businesswoman Emma Harrison; science educator, Professor John Holman; former director of Sheffield's Education Services, Jonathan Crossley-Holland; mountaineer and author Stephen Venables; world champion downhill mountain bike racer Steve Peat; and lawyer Michael Jelly.

Sheffield Hallam's Chancellor, Professor the Lord Robert Winston, has attended a number of the ceremonies being held at Sheffield City Hall from November 10 to 21.
